Some of the borough’s best artwork will go on display at Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive from Saturday, November 28.
The museum’s third annual Open Art exhibition will be open to the public until January 23, 2010 and features around 100 hand-selected works of art.
This popular exhibition offers artists who live, work or are in education in Bolton the opportunity to exhibit their work.
Around 500 pieces of work were submitted to the competition and the judging panel had the difficult task of selecting a range of art to feature in the final exhibition.
Judges included Steven Whittle, museum manager of Gallery Oldham; Tabitha Kyoko Moses, a former artist in residence at Bolton Museum and Kelda Savage, the crafts programme officer for Manchester Craft and Design Centre.
Executive member for Adult and Community Services, Councillor Elaine Sherrington, said: “The Open Art exhibition is a popular event in the museum calendar and always attracts such a high standard of entries. As someone who has dabbled in paint and canvass in the past, I admire anyone who can produce a piece of artwork that is good enough to appear at Bolton Museum. I would also encourage people to have a go next year, as you never know what artistic talent lies within.”
First prize will be awarded to Natalie Garforth for her photograph Untitled Portrait.
Second prize will go to Julie Harper for her embroidery piece Supermodel and third prize will be awarded to John Clark for his multi-media work Mists of Time.
The prizes will be awarded at a preview event on Friday, November 27. First prize of £500 is sponsored by Bolton Community College, the second and third prizes of £200 and £100 respectively are sponsored by the University of Bolton.
There is also a Visitor’s Choice award, sponsored by Sainsbury’s, and the winner will be decided by a public vote during the run of the exhibition.
