"The Somnambulist" by Sir John Everett Millais
By the 1860’s Sir John Everett Millais submitted to the more typical sentimental taste of the period. The Somnambulist bears witness to this shift in emphasis, but it has a haunting and mysterious quality, which sets it apart from the artist’s anecdotal subject pictures that were widely popularised by colour prints.

"Classical Landscape" by Gaspard Dughet
Gaspard Dughet's work combined the romanticism of the French landscape painter Claude Lorrain with the solidity of Poussin, although Dughet preferred to depict more rugged scenery.

"Nearing Camp, Evening on the Colorado River" by Thomas Moran
Thomas Moran is perhaps most famous for his monumental landscape paintings of the American West, which resulted from his opportunity to join the first geographical survey of Yellowstone in 1871. It was his paintings that captured the magnificence of the scenery, combined with the written reports and photographs that persuaded Congress to create the first of America’s great national parks.
