Donations and Identifications
Our collections access team are happy to try and identify items or consider new donations for the collections.
- Please note that this service works by appointment only - we can not accept objects brought in without a prior arrangement.
In some cases we may ask for the objects to be left at the Museum to allow more time for research. In this case we will provide the owner with a receipt.
If the Museum is unable to accept the donation or provide any information, we will try and suggest another institution or person who may be able to help.Bolton Museum cannot provide valuations for any items bought in by the public. For valuations please contact an auction house or antiques dealer.
Archaeological finds
A more specialist identification can be provided by the Greater Manchester Finds Liaison Officer, Vanessa Oakden.
Vanessa works for the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), a voluntary recording scheme with a publicly-accessible database.
She is keen to see any finds and will record all British archaeological artefacts (dating before 1700).
Vanessa is available to view your enquiries at Manchester Museum on the Third Friday of every month between 10pm and 4pm.
Alternatively you can contact her at National Museums, Liverpool.
